Degree Descriptions

Masters in Business Administration (MBA)

Description: Penn State Erie’s MBA Program is within the campus’s AACSB accredited school of business. Within the program you study leadership and organizational strategies  under topics such as Ethics, Innovation, Organization Change and Strategic Planning. While also learning analysis tools in classes like Quantitative Methods for Business, Corporate Finance and Cost Management.  More information can be found here

Reason for taking: In undergrad I studied many of the functional how’s for processes. I could build a website, or run a regression analysis but I wanted to understand  the at a higher level. Why a business might choose to run a particular product, or program, while scrapping others. When the opportunity arrived to have it paid for I jumped at the chance.

Organizational Leadership Certificate (MBA)

Description: The Organizational Leadership Certificate allows students to study the fundamentals of management theory, teaching the skills to navigate challenges, adapt to change and lead a team to success.

Reason for Taking: Since being a team captain in middle school basket ball, I have always wanted to best be able to set my team up for success. MBA classes have a way of teaching ideas and theory’s that you might not even be aware they exist, these teach you how to think outside yourself and act in the teams best interest in an ethical way.

Digital Media Arts and Technology (DIGIT)

Description: Digital Media Arts and Technology or DIGIT is a degree local to Erie in the Penn State System. The program aims to combine the liberal arts with more technical skills combining technology, and creativity into one package. DIGIT Allows students to specialize in different categories of  the digital humanities. I chose Data Visualization and Digital Humanities.

Reason for Taking: Similarly with my MBA coming out of High School I held a fascination with the why of things. I believed DIGIT held the unique ability to take stories found in data sets and present them in a creative and interesting way. As I went through undergrad the program suffered from severe staff turnover, leading to my interests falling more in line with programs run in the MIS program and the Addition of an MIS minor.

Management of Information Systems (MIS)

Description:  MIS teaches students the insides of the data, collection, storage, and analysis. The program allows for some crossover between programming and business understanding.

Reason for taking: As discussed earlier I added this minor out of a love for material and a stronger correlation with my career and professional goals. Through this minor I was able to secure multiple internship projects and eventually receive the offer of Graduate Assistant and have my Masters be Paid for.
